ten differentiated word searches focusing on the months and seasons of the year in Spanish. My students really enjoy practicing their vocabulary with word searches. They like to work independently, either alone, in pairs or in small groups, challenging themselves and each other to progress through the challenges. In general, sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids.
Word searches are easily differentiated too. In this set, there are five Spanish to Spanish grids, with the Spanish words as prompts. Students then find them in Spanish in the grid. A great way of really consolidating vocabulary is to get students to complete the word list on the grid sheet too. There are also five English to Spanish grids. With these, the prompt words are in English, so students have to know the correct Spanish word in order to find it in the grid. There’s a word list to complete on these too. As the challenge increases, the words appear in an increasing number of different directions, and students can identify which directions they’re looking for by referring to the arrow key on each grid.

SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES #1

Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 Spanish Christmas words, which I also use as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too.
There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, where students are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are absolutely essential for me, as they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, help them develop more independence in their learning.
There’s a Spanish-English Christmas vocabulary reference sheet - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find the gifts and work out what that is in Spanish - only the prompt the gift appears in the reference list.

Ideal for young and beginner Spanish learners. I like to give my language learners comprehensive core vocabulary books and reference resources. They enable them to work more independently, both in class and at home. This Spanish Telling Time Reference Book has 14 pages, and features every analog clock time in Spanish. There’s a My Notes page too - I encourage students to make notes on their progress, and think about how they are progressing. We also use this to inform and guide whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really popular and effective activity too.
I like to give visual vocabulary guides to my young beginner language learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. It’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. Students file the guides in their Spanish vocabulary folders with other vocabulary guides, which gives them an accessible and useful Spanish vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
For young and / or beginner Spanish learners, I focus initially on a single time set, because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to Spanish prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with o’clock, I then move on to additional time sets.

Ten differentiated word searches, focusing on 25 fruits in Spanish, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps students think a little more laterally about language, and their new vocab - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. There are high-frequency fruits, such as apple or pear, and also fruits which may be new to some learners, such as redcurrant or starfruit. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as the letter j (uvas rojas), which is a sound particular to Spanish, and the letter ñ (piña), as the tilde + n plays a very important role in Spanish pronunciation.
There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, labelled with a lemon, where learners are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, labelled with a raspberry, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing/spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page.
The fruits included are:
green apples : red apple : bananas : cherries : dates : fig : green grapes red grapes : kiwi : lemon : mango : nectarine : olives : oranges : papaya peach : pear : pineapple : pumpkin : raspberry : redcurrants : rhubarb : starfruit : strawberries : watermelon

My students have always found these a really useful learning activity. With the structured speaking prompts, they are able to develop confidence in their speaking, working independently in pairs or small groups. At the same time, they are building their vocabulary and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of German grammar too.
There are 15 questions with 15 suggested responses. As students become more confident and competent, they begin to rely less on the prompt cards, and answer questions in their own way - and even ask them differently too, if their talk partner is using the answer card as the main prompt.
The questions in this freebie are aimed at advanced beginner German to intermediate German students, though my more advanced students enjoy ‘going back to the start’ too, particularly near exam time. There’s a reference sheet, with all the questions and answers written out in full - I always provide a reference resource, and my students like to keep them in their learning folders for longer-term reference. When they create their own questions and answers for each other on the question and answer card template, they also find them really useful as a form of writing frame.
I always laminate my language learning cards, even though the prep is a bit time-consuming - they’re far sturdier and easier to use, and will definitely last for years!

English Numbers 0-31 I have, Who has? This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for practicing, reinforcing & refreshing how to count from 0 - 31 in English. The game has a***multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading***, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to create an English number chain as quickly as possible, starting with the first card zero, and ending with the final card, thirty-one. The game works just as well if the number sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my young beginner learners, but I’ve also played the game with my adult learners, who really enjoy it too - the monster theme is popular with everyone! The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are starting to familiarize themselves with the written word. Try to print in color if you can - it adds to the visual appeal of the game, which is a real motivator for learning.
Download, print out, laminate, cut out & shuffle the cards. I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I often play too - students really do enjoy it when I join in, and they seem to work that little bit harder on their concentration and pronunciation. Students walk around the room, talking to each other in their best English accent, sharing the information on their cards, until they have arranged the numbers in the correct order. The game works best played against a timer, regularly over a longer-term series of lessons - can students beat beat their own time record? I always do some high-speed counting warm-up activities, forwards & backwards, to get everyone ready to play!

High-frequency German verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of high-frequency German verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
There are 99 common German verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the German and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different.
There are three games, each with a different level of challenge:
Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, German to English
Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also German to English
Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to German, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall
There’s a full alphabetical German-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified.

Task cards are an ideal language learning activity. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of fruits in German in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words and more complex sentences in German.
Sentence structure and word order may differ from students’ first and/or home language, so it’s important to provide them with opportunities to engage with language that moves beyond single-unit vocabulary as soon as possible. It also gives them chance to apply language in a practical, real-world context, which in turn helps embed both vocab and grammatical concepts into longer-term memory.
The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on the target vocab, but also to work on German language skills in general, such as cases, adjectival endings, grammatical structures such as um… zu + infinitive and so on. The goal is not simply to learn the target vocabulary in German, but also to enjoy working with German, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions are all in German, and range in complexity and challenge.
There is alphabetical German-English and English-German fruits list with masculine and feminine fruits, definite and indefinite article, and singular and plural - this really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from German to English and English to German, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner German learners.
The resource comprises the following 4 files:
= 36 question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper.
= answer recording sheet
= answer key
= 2-page alphabetical fruits list, German-English & English-German

There are 35 fruits and 37 vegetables addressed in the task cards, and it’s unlikely that they are all in your teaching and learning plan. I always include additional vocabulary to add a little challenge, and to encourage students to think a little more creatively and independently. There’s an alphabetical German-English and English-German fruits and vegetables lists with masculine and feminine fruits, definite and indefinite article, and singular and plural . This really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts without explicit instruction.
There are some translation questions too - both from German to English and English to German, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner learners. I explain that there are several possible correct alternatives, as translation is not a word-for-word activity, which is definitely useful for them to know from the very beginning of their learning.
The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and grammatical concepts creatively and practically too.
The bundle consists of 3 individual sets of task cards, each containing the following:
Set of 36 question cards
2-page answer recording sheet

Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of German vegetables in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
There is an alphabetical German-English and English-German vegetables list with masculine and feminine vegetables, definite and indefinite article, and singular and plural - this really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from German to English and English to German, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner German learners.
The resource comprises the following non-editable files:
= 36 question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper.
= 2-page answer recording sheet
= 2-page answer key

Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practicing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on Numbers 0-31 in French, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with the target vocabulary, but also aligning with cross-curricular learning - working on reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and French language skills in general.
Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching, to gap-fill, scrambled letters and more complex questions, which feature mathematical language in French. Hyphens are important in French numbers, and the grids feature these quite clearly, in order to ensure that learners can practice this aspect of language.
There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. For me, answer keys are essential, as they not only provide learners with another opportunity to engage with language, but they also help them develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver - a real bonus!
There is a single word search per page, portrait format. I like to ensure that text is accessible to all learners - and at this stage of their learning, it’s absolutely essential that language looks accessible and manageable.
There are two formats to choose from - the search grids and answer keys as separate worksheets, and also a file with both grids and answer keys together, so that you can print each grid and key double-sided, according to which suits your classroom needs better.

Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas.

Parole Intrecciate are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features 10 differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. There are 5 Italian to Italian grids, where learners are prompted with Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test!
There are also 5 English to Italian grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Italian equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Italian, they also complete the Italian word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid.
Answer keys also provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner learners of Italian. This kind of activity is really versatile too, I use them as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m introducing days of the week in Italian.
Try this Italian Days of the Week Word Search Freebie - the format is the same as these word searches, and you can see whether they will work for your learners:
